Alexandra Copeland (1947- ) was born in Melbourne and grew up in a community of artists and potters. In 1968, she completed a course on Film and Television Production and Design at Swinburne Technical College (now Swinburne University) and started work as a production manager in the Australian film industry. She had always painted and drawn and she began at this time to experiment with painting in majolica on ceramics. In 1971-1972, she travelled extensively in Asia, Europe and North Africa, visiting major museums and collections. From 1973-1982, she continued painting and working with clay while dealing in tribal art and textiles. She held her first solo exhibition at Distelfink in 1983 and this led eventually to a lifetime working full-time as a potter. She works without using preparatory sketches or stencils, drawing a blue outline directly onto the tin-glaze surface, then applying the colour. She has had a long-time association with Dartington Pottery in Devon, UK, starting with a two-months' residency in 1997, and has participated in other residencies in porcelain studios in Thailand and China. She and her husbandLeigh Copeland have also continued their interest in tribal art and textiles through their Weft Gallery in East Malvern. Alexandra's mark is a painted 'Alexandra Copeland', 'A. Copeland', 'Copeland' or 'A.C.'.
